At its core, insulin resistance is like a stubborn lock that refuses to open in response to insulin's key.

Your cells, which should eagerly welcome glucose for energy, begin to resist its entry.

Initially, your pancreas makes more insulin to try to overcome the resistance.  But eventually, as the insulin resistance increases, and your pancreas can't keep up, your blood sugar levels rise, leading to prediabetes and then type 2 diabetes.

It's a vicious cycle. As you develop insulin resistance, you are more likely to accumulate visceral fat (the fat in and around your abdominal organs).  Then as you develop more visceral fat, you will develop more insulin resistance.  The end result is a worsening cycle of insulin resistance and fat creation.
